Tradition, Transformation & Passion – Friesland Porcelain Since 1953

The story of Friesland Porzellan began in 1953 on a unique piece of land in Varel, Northern Germany. Originally sought as a new site for Melitta’s coffee filters and paper production, it soon became the birthplace of a porcelain brand known for craftsmanship, authenticity, and timeless design.

From Melitta to Friesland – Filters, Coffee Pots & a Passion for Everyday Beauty

Just a year after its founding, the factory was producing not only filters but also vibrant stoneware coffee pots. Paired with matching filters, the iconic “Filka” set was born. By the 1960s, the factory was booming and employed over 1,200 people, most of them women, which earned it the local nickname “Frolüüd-Tichelee” (“women’s brickworks”).

Classic collections such as Minden, Jeverland and Ammerland became household favorites. Renowned designer Lieselotte Kantner shaped the style of Friesland for decades with designs that were timeless, functional and full of northern character.

Innovation Grounded in Craft

The development of Ceracron, a particularly durable material, and the shift toward porcelain for everyday use brought resilience and beauty into daily life. Through every challenge, Friesland remained true to its core: creating quality, practical porcelain made with heart in Northern Germany.

A Fresh Start with Vision

After years of economic struggle, Uwe Apken took over the factory in 2005. With bold ideas, he modernized the company, launched an online shop, and helped Friesland reconnect with both longtime fans and a new generation of design lovers.

In 2019, Friesland entered a new chapter by joining the BORNEGO Group in the Netherlands. This ensured the long-term future of the brand and brought fresh momentum to its traditional craftsmanship.

Looking Ahead – Even in the Face of Setbacks

In summer 2023, a devastating fire destroyed much of the production facilities and storage. But giving up is not an option. Today, we’re working with full dedication to rebuilding the factory right here in Varel – because we believe in our roots, our people, and the future of Friesland porcelain.
